A cyclone slammed into India's eastern seaboard on Thursday, destroying huts, uprooting trees, snapping power lines and telephone poles, leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

A man stands near Arjipalli beach during rain and strong winds caused by cyclonic storm named Titli, or Butterfly near Gopalpur on the Bay of Bengal coast, Ganjam district, eastern Orissa state, India, Thursday, Oct.11, 2018.

Road communication between Paralakhemundi and Mohana and some other block headquarters in Gajapati had been disrupted under the impact of the cyclone, he said. Standing crops in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts also reported damages on a massive scale.

Gopalpur: Cyclone Titli made its landfall on Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast early this morning, bringing with it heavy rain and winds gusting at 140-150 kmph.

In Bangladesh, Titli is likely to move Northwestwards and has started crossing the coast, said a special bulletin of the Met office.

It is expected to curve northeastwards again towards the Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha, but losing power all the while.

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik is slated to take a review of the overall damage caused by Cyclone Titli.

The chief secretary said so far, 10 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and eight teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been deployed in various coastal and interior districts.

Patnaik has also ordered closure of all schools, colleges and anganwadi centres on Thursday and Friday in view of the IMD's forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state.

"Long distance trains slated to pass through East Coast Railway jurisdiction between Khurda Road and Vizianagaram on Howrah-Chennai main line may be diverted via Kharagpur-Jharsuguda-Nagpur-Balharshah-Vijayawada route", he said. Officials have also shifted 123 pregnant women to hospitals.

The latest observations indicate that "Titli", over west-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of about 19 kmph during the past six hours.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has classified it as a "very severe cyclone".

Districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall till Thursday, the IMD said.
