Africa´s youngest billionaire kidnapped in Tanzania

Hunt on as Tanzanian billionaire Mohamed Dewji abducted in Dar

The billionaire heads the MeTL Group which operates in about 10 countries with interests in agriculture to insurance, transport, logistics and the food industry.

Mr Dewji, popularly known as Mo, was abducted as he walked into the exclusive Colosseum Hotel and Fitness Club, in Oyster Bay, an affluent neighbourhood in northwest Dar es Salaam.

The abductors, who are believed to be foreign nationals, accessed the gym through gates that are believed to have been left open deliberately, Dar es Salaam regional police commissioner Lazaro Mambosaso told CNN.

In 2013, he became the first Tanzanian to grace the cover of Forbes magazine and was named Forbes Africa Person of the Year in 2015.

According to Mambosasa, three people have been arrested for questioning in connection to the incident.

Mohammed Dewji, a Tanzanian business tycoon said to be Africa's youngest billionaire, photographed during an interview at his office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, April 23, 2015.

Dar es Salaam police chief Lazaro Mambosasa told a press conference that the assailants had "shot into the air" before bustling Dewji into their auto. "They (the four were masked individuals) fired one bullet in the air and all the hotel security guards ran away", he said.

According to eyewitnesses, unknown men arrived in two vehicles and parked at the hotel before Mr Dewji got there.

Police have 12 suspects in custody including the hotel's manager, the AP reported, citing Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda's comments to a local media outlet.

Mr Dewji, who at 43 is Africa's youngest billionaire, is in effect Tanzania's only oligarch.
