Trump hails cops in Orlando

Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein

President Donald Trump addressed the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Convention in Orlando Monday afternoon, voicing support for "stop and frisk" policies and touting the success of his Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh. White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told reporters traveling with Trump that the duo talked for 30 minutes during the flight to Florida.

President Trump says he will hold talks with the deputy attorney general on Air Force One amid speculation that Rosenstein may resign or be fired.

Trump had previously said he would prefer not to fire the Justice Department's No. 2 official and that Rosenstein has told him he did not say the remarks attributed to him.

"So, while resources are always welcome, the idea of what President Trump is talking about is not only not welcome - it's antithetical to what we're working on, and that is about a strong, pro-active, professional police department". It was the most extensive known meeting between the two since the New York Times report. But when he showed up at the White House last Monday to meet with Kelly, he left the meeting unscathed.

Rosenstein oversees Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump said the policy works and is meant for "problems like Chicago". Rosenstein said he never pursued recording the President and denied any suggestion he advocated for Trump's removal.

"Do you have any plans to fire Rod Rosenstein?" a reporter asked. He survived again on Monday.

"No, I don't. No", Trump replied. "She's leading now substantially, which she should", Trump said. So far, most Republicans are sticking by Trump, but if the party concludes his antics since taking office contributed to the GOP losing the House - and possibly the Senate - then the impeachment math could swing against him. Advisers had also cautioned Trump against doing anything dramatic in the weeks before the midterm elections next month, suggesting Rosenstein's job is safe at least for now. The documents reportedly chronicle conversations in which Rosenstein discussed the idea of secretly recording Trump for the goal of invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.

"Just look at what is now being exposed in the Department of Justice and the FBI", Trump had said at a rally, "look at what's going on". Don't hit their head, I said, 'You can take the hand away, OK?' " he added.
