South Koreans visiting North Korea for summit anniversary

U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert addresses a press briefing in Washington D.C. the United States on Oct. 2 2018

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to travel to Pyongyang this weekend to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un; setting the stage for a new round of talks regarding both nations' pledged goal of denuclearizing the region.

On the agenda is likely the planning of a second summit between Kim and President Trump.

"And then we fell in love", he said at a rally in West Virginia Saturday.

The key to consolidating peace and security on the Korean Peninsula is to thoroughly implement the joint statement adopted at the historic summit between DPRK top leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in Singapore in June, said Ri.

Pompeo declined to comment on negative signals from North Korea, which have included demands for a lifting of sanctions and complaints about Washington's apparent reluctance to agree to a declaration to end the 1950-53 Korean War without major concessions. "It takes a little while to put these together, and we want to make sure we've got the conditions just right so the two leaders can be successful".

Pompeo also will visit Japan, South Korea and China as part of his trip, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert announced.

Nauert said the meetings in Japan, South Korea and China were meant to brief counterparts on the talks in Pyongyang.

Trump's diplomatic overtures are building the trust that will make North Korea feel comfortable with making concessions and joining the rest of us in the 21st century.

Earlier Tuesday, North Korea's official propaganda ministry accused the USA of "trying to subdue" it through sanctions, indicating that the Kim regime could see lifting such sanctions as a key bargaining chip in any talks over the future of North Korea's nuclear program.

"It will be the USA and North Korea who will deal with denuclearization firsthand".

The framing of incidents on Korea's western coast as armed accidents, rather than planned attacks, goes against evidence the North Korean military had increased communication ahead of conflicts, such as the bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island, a former South Korean intelligence official told the JoongAng. But he added that much work remains to be done and that the sanctions against North Korea will stay in place "until denuclearization occurs". He said Pyongyang had taken 'significant goodwill measures, ' such as halting nuclear and missile testing and dismantling a nuclear test site with no response from Washington. They held the first-ever summit between a U.S. and a North Korean leader in June.

Cho told South Korean lawmakers on Monday that North Korea is estimated to have 20 to 60 nuclear weapons, in Seoul's first public comment about the size of the North's weapons arsenal.

Trump last week slapped $200 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods and has accused Beijing of interfering in the upcoming United States election because of his hard line on trade.
