India vs West Indies

Teenager Shaw's debut ton puts West Indies on backfoot

Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja slammed centuries as the Indian batsmen put the Windies bowling attack to the sword.

It was a maiden Test ton for Jadeja, who had to wait for nearly six years to reach three figures in the five-day format.

Any hopes that West Indies had of finding further immediate breakthroughs were then dashed as Shaw and Pujara combined in a 206-run second wicket stand to consolidate the innings.

But it was the Indian batsmen who made the world's number one side dominate after centuries by debutant Prithvi Shaw, skipper Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja.

Roston Chase (53) and Keemo Paul (47) counter-attacked briefly but India took the final four wickets in the first session, with Ravichandran Ashwin claiming 4-37, as Kohli enforced the follow on.

However, there was some early celebration for the Windies when Gabriel struck Rahul in front with the sixth ball of the match with just three runs on the board.

Former England bowler Lucy Pearson, who was head of the school in Manchester that teenager Shaw played for six years ago, was not surprised by his impact on debut.

Kohli, who was 72 not out overnight, took time to knock off the 28 runs needed for yet another hundred while his partner Pant, who resumed at 17, went all guns blazing.

Kohli became the quickest batsman to reach 24 Test centuries after the great Donald Bradman. Opener Kieran Powell was the only West Indies batsman to make a contribution in the second innings, an entertaining 83 off 93 balls with eight boundaries and four sixes. He used his strong wrists to get to the desired elevation and distance.

The way Pant was plundering the bowlers, it seemed he would get to three figures before his skipper.
