Kavanaugh investigation: FBI 'hasn't spoken to Christine Blasey Ford'

Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill on Thursday

Trump's mockery of Ford at a campaign rally on Tuesday night intensified political pressure on senators Jeff Flake of Arizona, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME as they consider how they will vote on Kavanaugh.

So far, no Republicans have said they would vote against Kavanaugh.

All three undecided Republicans condemned Trump's remarks.

He had previously called her a "very credible witness". "There's no time or place, but particularly, to discuss something so sensitive at a political rally is just wrong", Flake told CNN's Raju.

The FBI is conducting a supplemental background investigation into the nominee after he and Ford testified Thursday before the Judiciary Committee about her allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were in high school.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders dismissed the widespread view that Trump mocked Ford.

Mr Judge's testimony is considered key to the investigation, as Professor Christine Blasey Ford says he was in the room when Brett Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her at a house in 1982.

"No one is looking at whether the accusations made are corroborated".

But at the event last night, aside from downright mocking her, he expressed more sympathy for Kavanaugh, and then he went on to attack someone (probably the Democrats) for being "evil". Jeff Flake and Susan Collins pointedly rebuking the president. With a slim majority in the Senate, Republicans can afford few defections, and the remarks outraged some of the swing-vote Republicans on whose vote Kavanaugh's confirmation rests. Many Republican senators have said they view the accusations and subsequent questions as desperate delay tactics on the part of Democrats. Lindsey Graham, also weighed in.

"I think both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh are victims at the hands of the Democrats", she said.

"This is about politics and this is about power, pure and simple", she said.

Anticipation for the report built as Republicans assessed the impact of Trump's Tuesday night tirade against Ford.

A campaign rally audience laughed as Mr Trump ran through a list of what he described as holes in Christine Blasey Ford's appearance before the US Senate Judiciary Committee. He told The New York Times that he "never, ever saw Brett Kavanaugh black out" from drinking and "never, ever saw him act inappropriately toward any woman in the 35 years that I've known him". "He's pointing out factual inconsistencies". "I hope that they're all contacted because I think that's the best way to find the truth is to interview all of the witnesses".

Flake was instrumental in getting Trump last Friday to initiate an FBI investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh, a conservative federal appeals court judge nominated by the president for a lifetime job on the top US court.

This raises the possibility of conservatives rallying around the Kavanaugh confirmation fight and cutting into the enthusiasm advantage among Democratic women, many of whom who were politically activated when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016. Richard Blumenthal of CT, who sits on the Judiciary Committee. "Thus, I can only provide my assessment of Dr. Ford's allegations in that legal context".
