Typhoon Trami lashes Japan with 104 miles per hour winds, rain

Typhoon Trami packing gusts of a maximum 162kmh near its centre was in the Pacific and spiralling slowly towards Japan's southern islands

Typhoon Trami has crippled large areas of Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, as torrential rains and high winds battered southern Japan Saturday. Evacuation orders were issued for tens of thousands of people over a widespread area, including more than 250,000 people in the city of Tokushima on the island of Shikoku, the national broadcaster NHK reported.

At least 82 people were injured in 16 prefectures, according to Kyodo News tallies.

Many flights were cancelled at major airports throughout Japan, including Tokyo's Narita and Haneda.

Airlines cancelled or plan to cancel more than 930 flights, public broadcaster NHK said.

Trami will threaten lives and property as it slams the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan with destructive winds, flooding rain and an inundating storm surge.

A ship washes ashore at a port in Yonabaru, Okinawa Prefecture.

Bullet train and other rail services were suspended while the storm passed.

East Japan Railway stopped all train services in and around Tokyo at 8:00 pm, shortly before the typhoon hit the Japanese capital.

Over Sept. 30 to October 1, the typhoon is expected to hit the Amami Islands, southern Kyushu, Shikoku and the Kinki regions in southwestern and western Japan with strong winds of up to 45 m/s (162 kph), with maximum gusts hitting 60 m/s (216 kph).

Jebi, was the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years, it brought some of the highest tides since a 1961 typhoon and flooded Kansai airport near Osaka, taking it out of service for days. Typhoon Jebi claimed 11 lives and shut down Kansai Airport, the main regional airport.

The weather agency issued a warning of landslides in Wakayama, western Japan, where local authorities separately announced that a local river had reached "dangerous levels".

Images from the International Space Station posted on Twitter by astronaut Alexander Gerst on Tuesday showed Trami's enormous eye which he said was "as if somebody pulled the planet's very big plug".

"People in Okinawa are used to typhoons but we are strongly urging them to stay vigilant", he told AFP. Nearly all of services on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line are also being suspended throughout September 30, according to Central Japan Railway Co.

The typhoon is expected to retain all its force as it approaches western Japan, and will likely make landfall around the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture on the evening of September 30.

West Japan Railway Co said it will also suspend all train services in the metropolitan area centering on Osaka by noon Sunday as a precautionary measure.

Also in September, a magnitude 6.6 natural disaster rocked the northern island of Hokkaido, sparking landslides and leaving more than 40 people dead.
