'Protestors' Who Confronted Flake Over Kavanaugh Vote May Have Ulterior Motives

Brett Kavanaugh

President Donald Trump is directing the FBI to launch a supplemental investigation into his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh at the request of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Christine Blasey Ford, the first woman to step forward with allegations of sexual assault against Judge Brett Kavanaugh, has not heard from FBI investigators examining claims made by Ford and others, a member of her legal team said Sunday. Hours later, Trump ordered an FBI investigation of Kavanaugh upon Republican Sen. Was it to "stand in solidarity with Dr. Ford" and Kavanaugh's other accusers?

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said oversight of the investigation belonged to the Senate.

Mr. Trump quickly directed the FBI to conduct the probe at the request of the Senate Judiciary Committee, writing in a statement that the investigation "must be limited in scope and completed in less than one week".

While the precise scope of the reopened background investigation of Kavanaugh remained unclear, Trump told reporters Saturday that "the FBI, as you know, is all over talking to everybody" and said "this could be a blessing in disguise".

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's testimony gave the impression of someone who was rightfully angry, Sen. It would also include, Graham added, interviews with Deborah Ramirez, who alleges Kavanaugh exposed himself to her in college, and Mark Judge, a high school friend of Kavanaugh's who Ford testified was in the room for the alleged assault.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh testifies during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on his nomination be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, U.S., September 27, 2018. "I encourage them to use the next week to gather any additional relevant facts, and then act on this nomination".

Many Democrats have called for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to take a broader look at whether Kavanaugh may have misled senators by minimizing his carousing behavior in high school and college or by mischaracterizing entries in his high school yearbook that could indicate a penchant for drunken and misogynistic behavior.

David Gomez, a former FBI counterterrorism supervisor in Seattle, said officials at FBI headquarters typically will divide up leads that get assigned to different field offices across the country for further investigation and will set a quick deadline.

Flake said that after discussing the matter with fellow senators, he felt it "would be proper to delay the floor vote for up to but not more than one week". "You're telling me that my assault doesn't matter, that what happened to me doesn't matter, that you're going to let people who do these things into power". Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said it was his understanding there would be an FBI investigation of "the outstanding allegations, the three of them", but Republicans have not said whether that was their understanding as well. He is retiring at the end of the year and the Republican congresswoman seeking to replace him, Martha McSally, said nothing for much of this week before releasing a statement Friday afternoon noting Kavanaugh and Ford were "heard". The Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favour of Kavanaugh along party lines Friday.

"To see his family behind him, as Chris said, it was anger - but if I were unjustly accused, that's how I would feel as well", Flake said.

"Republicans have to ask themselves if they're willing not only to sell the soul of the party, but sell their own souls to get this particular conservative on the Supreme Court", Horn said in an interview.

Nancy Mace, the first woman to graduate from The Citadel and a Republican state representative from Daniel Island, South Carolina, said she had been sexually assaulted as a teen herself. "I believe in due process", she said. Joe Manchin said he supported Flake's call to push off a full Senate vote until the FBI investigates Ford's allegation. "They are just compiling the investigation and reporting on it". I haven't met her.
