Man rescued from doomed ferry in Tanzania

Tanzania ferry disaster: Captain arrested as death toll rises

Tanzanian rescue workers remove bodies of victims from the water on 22 September 2018, a day after the ferry MV Nyerere capsized in Lake Victoria, Tanzania.

The MV Nyerere, named for the former president who led the East African nation to independence, was travelling between the islands of Ukara and Ukerewe when it sank, according to the government agency in charge of servicing the vessels.

State broadcaster TBC reported that divers recovered 24 bodies on Saturday morning.

A man has been found alive inside a Tanzanian ferry two days after it capsized, as the official death toll reached over 200.

Hopes were fading of finding any more survivors three days after the ferry sank on Thursday, even after rescuers pulled out an engineer who had managed to find refuge in an air pocket in the upturned vessel. Local media say the ferry might have been carrying 200 passengers when it capsized.

It overturned when crowds on deck and below moved to one side as it docked.

"I am asking the government to prepare rescue teams in Tanzania because we have the marines, police and navy", Farki said.

"These sorts of ferry disasters where Africans are using waterways nearly as highways in the US happen periodically, and sometimes hundreds of people are killed", Quist-Arcton said. It was market day, which usually sees the vessel packed with people and goods.

"I was lucky that I was able to swim under water not knowing where I was swimming to.while trying to swim to safety, I found a number of metal bars that cut my face and the back of my head", he said.

It's unclear how many passengers were aboard the ferry.

Initial reports indicated the cause of the incident was overloading, Magufuli added, but a committee is being formed to provide more details.

"I have information that some have been arrested, including the captain, who, I am told, was not on board". "We have repeatedly denounced this negligence", said John Mnyika, deputy secretary general of Chadema, the main opposition party.

"This is a great disaster for our nation", President John Magufuli said in an address to the nation on TBC.

With a surface area of 70,000 square kilometers, oval-shaped Lake Victoria is roughly the size of Ireland and is shared by Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. In 1996, a ferry disaster in the same region killed more than 500 people.
