Amazon planning "high-end hi-fi" range with Alexa voice control

Amazon plans to release a slew of devices with its personal assistant Alexa by the end of this year, at least according to a new report leaking the alleged plan. The devices include an amplifier, receiver, sub-woofer, in-car gadget and a microwave oven.

Amazon is tipped to reveal a few of these gadgets at an event later this month.

With devices like a microwave, subwoofer, and amplifier on the list of new Alexa-equipped Amazon goods, we're starting to branch further and further away from just smart speakers here and there.

These products mark Amazon's first move into the home appliances space, putting it in direct competition with companies like Sonos SONO and GE GE.

Amazon, of course, declined to comment about the news. The CNBC report also noted that having its own home appliances opens a new sales channel for Amazon, as the company can partner with smart home installation companies to bring its Alexa-powered devices to more homes. Developers who put the toolkit to work will be able to take advantage of four new features.

Earlier this year, Amazon acquired the smart doorbell maker Ring, which also makes devices that are compatible with Alexa. But it looks like the e-commerce firm is planning to expand its hardware portfolio drastically with as many as eight devices if the latest report by CNBC holds some weight.

Amazon Echo relies on Microsoft's Bing search engine and Wikipedia, while Google Home uses the company's own Google Search. Sonos, for example, has a similar business model, as it said in its quarterly filing that it relies on "custom installers of home audio systems for a significant portion of our sale". Around this time past year, Amazon revealed the newest members of the Echo family: the Echo Spot and updated Echo speakers.
