Brett Kavanaugh Accuser Comes Forward

Republicans pressing ahead with Kavanaugh nomination despite allegation

In an interview with the Washington Post published Sunday, Christine Blasey Ford, a professor at Palo Alto University, documented her alleged encounter with Kavanaugh, saying she feels a "civic responsibility" to speak out about the Supreme Court nominee.

Ford, who is a registered Democrat herself, told the Post that one summer in the early 1980s Kavanaugh and a friend, both of whom were "stumbling drunk", cornered her in a bedroom at a teenagers' party in a house in Montgomery County, a suburb of Washington. She said Kavanaugh pinned her to the bed and groped her, trying to remove her clothing and a one-piece bathing suit underneath. When she tried to scream, he put his hands over her mouth. "I did not do this back in high school or at any time", Kavanaugh said in the statement. The Post's article included an interview with Ford's husband and her lawyer, Debra Katz, and described a therapist's notes from 2012 in which Ford told of the attack.

The FBI confirmed it had received the letter but indicated it was not immediately pursuing the allegations. The letter was also shared with Feinstein in July. The uncertainty is due in part to the staleness of her claim and in part to the fact that it didn't surface until after Judge Kavanaugh had finished testifying. In addition, Sen. Feinstein has had the information for months and never mentioned it to other members of the Judiciary Committee or questioned Kavanaugh directly about it.

Now Kavanaugh's accuser has chose to no longer remain anonymous. The agency declined to investigate but sent it to the White House, who passed it on to all members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

HBO host Bill Maher said Friday that while he thought Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was a "suck-up", he thought Democrats' latest attack on him was counterproductive. "Anonymous allegations are not going to change the chairman's plans for a vote on Thursday", a top committee Republican aide tells Cindy Smith.

"Judge Kavanaugh's credibility has already been seriously questioned because of his answers regarding Manny Miranda, Judge Pryor, and other issues during his time in the Bush White House, and now his credibility is even more suspect", Schumer said.

Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which handles Supreme Court nominations, penned an op-ed published in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday formalizing her opposition to Kavanaugh's nomination and briefly referencing her decision to share the letter's contents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. President Donald Trump nominated him in July to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ford said that she had been reluctant to identify herself publicly for fear that it would disrupt her life, but she made a decision to as her letter and the story leaked.

In this regard, it's fair to note that Ford is a registered Democrat and a past contributor to some Democratic candidates.

Committee Republicans also released a statement Sunday dismissing the new revelations as "uncorroborated allegations from more than 35 years ago". She says there were four boys at the party but only two carried out this alleged assault.

Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill were blindsided by The Post's report, having believed that the woman would probably remain anonymous.
