Lexus ES will be first mirrorless production vehicle

20180912 01 04 Lexus rearview mirror cameras will debut in October

It will be the first mass-produced vehicle in the world to adopt such mirrors, the Japanese automaker said.

Essentially, the side mirrors are cameras, and the live feed is displayed on left and right screens inside the cabin.

Some new features touted by automakers ventually turn out to be novelties that never make it into production, but one feature manufacturers have been putting on their concepts for decades that hasn't gone away is now making it into production on the recently redesigned 2019 Lexus ES.

According to Lexus, they also give the driver an expanded view of the car's surrounding area by augmenting the display during cornering or reversing. The cameras in the Digital Outer Mirrors transmit the images onto 5-inch display monitors located inside the cabin at the base of the front pillars. Brightness will also be automatically adjusted to increase visibility at night and in bad weather, improving security. Interestingly, the brand says the digital mirrors are shaped to "resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow". And all it took was a little tinkering with the two mirrors popping out from the sides-by removing them completely and replacing them with digital cameras.

The sedan still has stalks sticking out of its sides, but their lower-profile design reduces aerodynamic drag for fuel efficiency and cuts down on wind noise. Come next month, Lexus will officially launch the "Digital Side-View Monitors" for the all-new ES.
