Why Hurricane Florence Is So Dangerous

Carolinas brace for Hurricane Florence which is going to be a 'Mike Tyson punch' to the coast FEMA official warns

As of 5:00 am (1100 GMT), Florence was a risky Category 4 hurricane packing sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (220 kilometers per hour), the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

The National Weather Service says the storm could bring 62 hours of such gusts and, in some areas, 24 straight hours of hurricane-force gusts. The storm is now about 950 miles from the Carolina coast line, but moving in that direction at about 15 mph.

"That's the primary driver of the evacuations that are underway by the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia right now".

"It is imperative that everyone follow local evacuation orders", President Trump tweeted Wednesday, along with a satellite video of the mammoth storm swirling through the Atlantic.

The nation's eyes are on Hurricane Florence, which overcame some big odds to target the East Coast this week. Rain and wind will linger into the weekend and we could even see showers carry into the start of the work week.

The path of Hurricane Florence has changed since Cooper made that statement Tuesday.

In 1999, the area was hit by Hurricane Floyd, which brought floods and heavy rain, swamping pig farms, including Murphy Family Farms near Beulaville, North Carolina.

Aside from that mammoth coastal flooding, Florence will likely inundate cities far inland as well. Some 1 million people have been ordered to evacuate.

Hurricane Florence, which is being described as a potentially catastrophic monster cyclone and the "storm of a lifetime", is bearing down on the Carolinas.

"We are uniquely positioned to establish a quick ad-hoc supply chain to support relief efforts", said Bettina Stix, an Amazon veteran credited with developing DRbA.

"An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft that was in the hurricane until just after midnight" recorded a peak wind gust of around 150 miles per hour, according to the hurricane center.

Forecasters said Florence was expected to blow ashore late Thursday or early Friday, then slow down and dump 1 to 2½ feet (0.3 to 0.6 meters) of rain that could cause flooding well inland and wreak environmental havoc by washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms.

"A motion toward the northwest is forecast to begin by this afternoon and continue through Thursday", the hurricane center says.

It's a different story in North Carolina.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Edisto Beach, South Carolina to South Santee River, South Carolina and North of Duck, North Carolina to the North Carolina-Virginia border.

"I'm scared we'll get 30 inches or more of rain", said Carol Trojniar, 69, a longtime Wilmington resident and retired real estate agent who has never experienced a Category 4 hurricane.
