NASA Footage Shows Strengthening Hurricane Florence From Space

Astronaut Ricky Arnold captured this image of Hurricane Florence from the International Space Station on Monday

A new high-definition video and photos taken from the International Space Station show the size of scope of Hurricane Florence, a Category 4 storm heading toward landfall in the Southeast U.S. later this week.

The US National Hurricane Centre has warned that Hurricane Florence will bring "life-threatening, catastrophic flash flooding" to North and SC.

European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst tweeted pictures taken 249 miles above the eye of the storm.

Astronaut Ricky Arnold, onboard the International Space Station, captured the hurricane churning in the Atlantic as it morphed into a monster storm.

On Wednesday, forecasters projected Florence - now a category 4 hurricane - will likely slow down and turn south after slamming the East Coast.

In fact, Gerst wrote on Twitter that Hurricane Florence is "so enormous" it could only fit in the frame of a wide-angle camera. "It's chilling, even from space", Gerst tweeted earlier today.

"This is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you", he added.

Meanwhile, NASA's Aqua satellite snapped an infrared image of Hurricane Florence on September 11, at 2:30 a.m. EDT.

NASA also recorded what it called "stark and sobering" video footage of Florence from the space station on Wednesday.
