Serena Williams Meltdown at 2018 US Open Women's Final

Osaka tames Keys to set up US Open final with childhood idol Serena

The US Open umpire slapped Williams with her first penalty - accusing her of being illegally coached from the stands. Williams made reference to the incident last week when French player Alize Cornet was warned for removing her shirt on court during a heatwave.

She said she did so because the momentous win was finally starting to dawn on her: "I felt like I needed a break from everything". Williams then approached the net and told Ramos: "I don't cheat". She received a penalty point for the second violation.

It's not the first time emotional outbursts have cost Williams at the US Open.

"You will never be on another court of mine as long as you live". You are the liar. You owe me an apology.

"How dare you insinuate that I was cheating? I'm really grateful I was able to play with you". Say it you're sorry. And you stole a point from me. This prompted a heated dialogue with the umpire Carlos Ramos. I have never cheated in my life. "We have never discussed signals", said Williams.

'I will say it again, if it happened in the men's match, it would not happen again.

"But I'm going to continue to fight for women and to fight for us to have (equality). That is not right".

Williams said after the match: "For me to say "thief" and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark".

"For me it blows my mind. This is outrageous".

Mouratoglou admitted he coached Williams from the box, but also said she probably wasn't aware he was doing so. Osaka said. "Everyone knows this".

"I've said far worse", McEnroe, a seven-times Grand Slam singles victor, said on ESPN. "Sascha (Bajin, Osaka's coach) was coaching every point, too".

The fall-out from this final is likely to rumble on for some time, with the long-time coaching partnership between Williams and Mouratoglou now under real strain. "This is not fair", Williams told Women's Tennis Association supervisor Donna Kelso.

"She's always working to improve; always eager to embrace new challenges; and to set new standards". Then, in the same tournament, Mohamed Lahyani gets off the umpires' chair to talk to Nick Kyrgios and persuade him not to give up on a match.

She described the awarding of penalties for relatively minor infractions as "pure pettiness" and an "abuse of power". Williams attempted to comfort Osaka before addressing the booing crowd.

Saturday's defeat comes at the heels of Williams' remarkable return to the game after the c-section birth of her daughter, Alexis.

The former French Open victor added that "tennis is the loser". "Thank you very much". "What Serena has accomplished this year in playing her way back on to the tour is truly fantastic", Adams said in the statement.

Public figures on social media also pointed out that umpires have given warnings, or no violations at all, to male players who have argued similarly in the past.

Fans were determined to see the positive, praising Williams and Osaka for their conduct in standing up for each other.
