Marcus Rashford suffers injury during England's defeat to Spain

England's Luke Shaw receives medical treatment after picking up an injury during the UEFA Nations League League A Group Four match at Wembley

Luke Shaw's first England start for three years was ended early by a nasty head injury after a collision with Spain's Dani Carvajal.

England have conceded six goals in their last three games in all competitions and Gareth Southgate will feel Spain were allowed back into the contest far too easily, particularly after Harry Maguire played Rodrigo onside for their second.

"Winning like this on this stage will do us a lot of good and we've started in the best way possible but in football the only thing that matters is the present".

"We'll go through some tests".

John Stones, Danny Rose, Jordan Henderson, Eric Dier and Jesse Lingard have all gone on to become key figures under Southgate since facing Spain the last time around, though, and the new-look England came within a whisker of reaching the World Cup final for the first time since 1966 in Russian Federation.

Playing out from the back rather than hoofing clear, England worked the ball to Kane who then found the marauding Shaw on the left and his pass was flawless for Rashford to slot past his Manchester United team mate De Gea.

England will now face World Cup runners-up Croatia in their next UEFA Nations League clash on Tuesday.

"When you think about the whole match, we deserved to win".

"But I thought he showed some good moments and he's a player that I am sure can play a big part with us as we move forwards", Southgate said.

Shaw left the field on a stretcher wearing an oxygen mask and a neck brace after lengthy treatment but was "up and talking" in the change rooms.

That clash gets underway from Wembley at 7:45pm on Tuesday evening in the final outing of the latest global break. He concluded his tweet by saying "I'm a fighter so I will be back soon". Not just losing but being out-played, at times, despite the slender scoreline and the dispute over whether Danny Welbeck's injury-time strike should have stood.
