Tropical Storm Gordon develops near South Florida

Tropical depression may form in the Gulf of Mexico this week

At about 15 miles west-southwest of Marco Island, FL., the tropical storm is heading west-northwest at 16 mph, with sustained winds of around 45 mph.

Gordon formed into a tropical storm near the Florida Keys early Monday as it headed west-northwest at 17 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Gordon continued its push toward the northern Gulf Coast and is expected to make landfall by Tuesday night as a hurricane, according to forecasters.

Residents in parts of South Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana are being warned to prepare for tropical storm-force winds with the onset of Tropical Storm Gordon.

The season's third hurricane of the Atlantic season formed Tuesday morning as Florence strengthened into a Category 1 storm with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

As of late Tuesday morning, Gordon's outer rainbands were already beginning to pelt the western Florida panhandle.

Until then, the tropical storm could cause unsafe storm surge, strong winds, and flash flooding along the Gulf Coast from the tip of Florida to eastern Texas.

The storm is then likely to continue strengthening as it moves into the eastern Gulf of Mexico Tuesday, before making landfall across the central Gulf Coast states Tuesday night. The National Hurricane Center says a tropical wave now over the Bahamas will move into the eastern Gulf Of Mexico on Labor Day and may strengthen as early as Tuesday.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for waters offshore of Apalachicola west to Walton/Okaloosa Counties.

Gordon is expected to continue on its current track or maybe a little more northwestward while continuing to strengthen.

Areas under a storm surge watch and storm surge warning. The region could see rising waters of 3 to 5 feet.

Some minor storm surge could occur along the gulf coast as well.

The tropics are continuing to show some activity with one tropical storm, a potential tropical cyclone, and a new disturbance.

The National Weather Service said Naples, Marco Island, and Everglades City also could expect hazardous weather on Monday. A tropical storm warning is in effect for much of Louisiana's southeastern coast.
