Pressley's upset another win for fresh Democratic voices

Ten-term male Democrat falls to progressive black woman in Massachusetts primary

Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley pulled off a surprise upset by defeating 10-term congressman Rep. Mike Capuano in a Democratic primary in MA on Tuesday. She and Ocasio-Cortez both defeated older, white congressmen who were reliable liberal votes, but who didn't look like many voters in their districts.

Although Pressley and her opponent shared a number of progressive values, her demand for the abolition of ICE, and her instance that she would bring a "bold activist leadership" to DC may have sealed her fate.

Before becoming a councillor she worked for Senator John Kerry and Congressman Joe Kennedy - whose grandfather, John F Kennedy held the seat Ms Pressley is set to win before he became president. I'm just as upset as they are, but so be it.

Ayanna Pressley is heading to the US Congress in the latest remarkable upset in this year's primaries in advance of the November midterm elections.

Pressley's win echoes the June primary in a safely Democratic New York City congressional district, where first-time candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat a 10-term incumbent, sparking enthusiasm for progressive candidates across the United States.

The Washington Post reported that Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA) conceded to Boston City Councilwoman Ayanna Pressley after polls closed in the state.

Pressley took on U.S. Representative Michael Capuano, who had not faced a primary challenge since he was first elected in 1998.

She was endorsed by fellow congressional upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who knocked off veteran Rep. Joe Crowley of NY in June. Additionally, Pressley entered her race with political experience, working 16 years as a congressional aide and serving nine years as a Boston city councilor. Pressley will also be the first person of color to ever represent the state in Congress.

The race between Capuano and Pressley was perhaps the most closely watched contest in MA, especially since Pressley drew comparisons to Ocasio-Cortez.

Ms Pressley argued she would bring new energy and awareness of the needs in the state's only congressional district where a majority of residents are not white. As FiveThirtyEight reports, a MA candidate has followed in the footsteps of the young Ocasio-Cortez with a surprising upset against a mainstream Democrat challenger on Tuesday evening. That race remained too close to call Wednesday.

In a recent interview at Tacos El Paso, a Mexican restaurant in Everett, she said she'd long idolized Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan, pioneering Democrats who were among the first black women in Congress. "People of every walk of life".
