The Economist stands by decision to include Steve Bannon in event

Steve Bannon

An annual festival organized by the prestigious New Yorker magazine has disinvited a headlining guest, former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, after numerous panelists announced they would drop out if he remained.

"The reaction on social media was critical and a lot of the dismay and anger was directed at me and my decision to engage him", Remnick said, adding that staff members had also objected to the invitation.

His inclusion at The New Yorker Festival set off an uproar after it was revealed on Monday.

"I've thought this through and talked to colleagues - and I've re-considered", Remnick, who has repeatedly denounced Trump and his administration, wrote of his decision on Bannon.

He then said concern from others about the setting of the interview, which he was due to conduct on-stage, had made him change his mind.

This is a developing story.

In the wake of the backlash, CNN's Brian Stelter posted a statement from Remnick in which he announced that Bannon was no longer invited to the festival. "This is PT Barnum level horseshit", he wrote calling Bannon an "amateur night sonofabitch".

Disinviting Steve Bannon doesn't make him go away.

Steve Bannon is known for his alt-right views that many in the public have linked with white supremacy.

"Bannon? And me? On the same program?" he wrote. Kathryn Schulz was among the New Yorker staff writers who tweeted that they had informed Remnick directly about their objections.

The weekly magazine had planned to interview Bannon, which it called a leading creator and organizer of "Trumpism", as a part of the October festival.

Quoting the magazine's founder, James Wilson, Beddoes described how its longstanding mission was to take part in "a severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress".

Donald Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon has been dropped from an American arts and politics festival after other panellists threatened to pull out.

"The reason for my acceptance was simple: I would be facing one of the most fearless journalists of his generation".

"To interview Bannon is not to endorse him", David Remnick said. "The question is whether an interview has value in terms of fact, argument, or even exposure, whether it has value to a reader or an audience".

While some people agreed with the celebrities taking a stand others questioned why the New Yorker invited Bannon to begin with. British writer Laurie Penny tweeted Monday that she "cannot in good conscience appear at an event which chooses to dignify a neo-nationalist like Steve Bannon".
