Did a Micrometeoroid Poke a Hole in the Space Station?

Suspected meteorite hits ISS causes oxygen-leaking crack – but it's not a big deal

To slack the leak, the crew used Kapton, a roughly industrial strength "residence tape" that remains stable across outrageous temperatures.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station spent part of their day today (Aug. 30) fixing a tiny air leak in a Soyuz capsule docked to the station. Roscosmos' Soyuz commander Sergey Prokopyev repaired the leak using epoxy placed on a gauze wipe.

NASA said on Thursday that the leak caused a minor reduction in cabin pressure on the ISS.

In 2007, another leak occurred in the station's Harmony module in the U.S. section but officials said at the time the leak was no cause for concern.

European astronaut Alexander Gerst reportedly plugged a leak in the International Space Station (ISS) with his finger until fellow crewmates could patch it off with tape.

'Flight controllers are working with the crew to develop a more comprehensive long-term fix'. Flight controllers will monitor the pressure trends overnight. Flight controllers in Houston are continuing to monitor station's cabin pressure in the wake of the fix.

According to a new update from NASA, a series of "extensive checks" by the crew eventually resulted in the issue being found on the orbital outpost on the Russian side.

Russia's space agency Roscosmos said in a statement that "the safety and health of the crew are not threatened" following the incident.

The hole was found in the Russian-made Soyuz capsule which is one of two now docked to the space station. But there's no way to track tiny pieces of natural and artificial debris, which abound in the station's orbit.

The Soyuz spacecraft is one of three spaceships now docked at the space station.

The hole is located in the upper section of the Soyuz, which does not return to Earth, according to Nasa.

The sources report that the damage to the Soyuz capsule was likely caused by a micrometeorite hitting the spacecraft and breaching through its wall.
