'Gather round': Apple unveils iPhone launch date

Apple expected to unveil new iPhone models on September 12

Apple just sent out invites for its September event, where the company is expected to introduce three new iPhones, a new Apple Watch, new MacBook devices, new AirPods, and the AirPower wireless charger. The invite didn't provide any more details about the event, but it was accompanied by a graphic of a circle with the phrase "Gather Round" underneath it.

The stunning venue is set within the grounds of the firm's giant circular Apple Park headquarters. Apple usually streams its event live online but if you are unable to tune in, we'll have coverage of the day's events right here on TechSpot.

Apple, as always, has remained tight-lipped about its product plans, and it's not clear how the company will pitch so many new models of the iPhone to customers. Surprisingly, the model names of the upcoming devices are said to belong to the iPhone XS naming structure, so let us see if this ends up being true during the keynote. It's rumored to come in new colors, too, but which colors those will be remains unknown. Each time Apple has unveiled a new Apple Watch model, it has done so alongside a new iPhone, while Mac and iPad updates are sometimes unveiled separately.

If previous years are any indication, Apple's new iPhones could go on sale the following week, perhaps on September 21.

A report from 9to5Mac's Zac Hall claims this is an exclusive look at the next watch. There are also reports Apple might be considering an "S" cycle this year.

Apple's event invitation made heavy use of the color gold, fueling speculation on social media that the company plans to launch a gold-colored successor to the iPhone X, which was made available only in silver and gray a year ago.

Apple's special event live streams normally have specific requirements to be able to watch events unfold, requiring either Safari on iOS or macOS, Apple TV, or Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.
