Trump adviser Bolton says Russia 'stuck' in Syria, Iran must leave

How Iran welcomes American Tourists without the US Government ever knowing | Travel News

Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev said he and his USA counterpart John Bolton had broadly agreed to re-open communication lines between their respective foreign and defence ministries, the RIA news agency reported on Thursday.

His remarks came after US National Security Adviser John Bolton said earlier that Russian Federation was "stuck" in Syria and looking for others to fund post-war reconstruction there, describing this as an opportunity for Washington to press for Iranian forces to quit the country.

The sides also discussed a number of pressing worldwide issues, including Syria, Ukraine, sanctions and arms control treaties, as well as prospects for Russian-US security interaction.

Bolton also maintained that the US' withdrawal from the nuclear deal, as well as the snapping back of sanctions whose first stage already began, had "put a real crimp into the Iranian economy".

Bolton still said the United States is determined to force all Iranian forces across the planet to return to Iran, and that he believes Russian Federation agrees with that goal. "And we talked about a variety of ways in which it might be accomplished through a series of steps", Bolton said after talks in Geneva.

"I felt it was important to mention election meddling, which we raised a number of times", Bolton said, but Patrushev disagreed.

Patrushev, according to state-run RIA news agency, said that no statement had been written "because the Americans wanted this to say that we had meddled in their elections, as is their opinion, but we deny this".

The National Security Adviser said he warned Nikolai Patrushev against any effort at interfering in the 2018 mid-terms and that America is 'prepared to take necessary steps to prevent it from happening'.

Mr Ahmad Khatami also told worshippers attending prayers in Teheran that US President Donald Trump's offer of talks with Iranian leaders was unacceptable, as Mr Trump wanted Teheran to concede on its missile programme and regional influence.

Iran and Russian Federation are two leading backers of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Top American officials have traditionally participated in the annual ceremonies as a show of USA support for Ukraine, which this year celebrates its 27th year of independence from the Soviet Union. "I would say in comparison this current Russiagate... is just minuscule, as far as I'm concerned", Paul told RT.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday during a visit to Jerusalem, John Bolton said: "We now see plans for the Syrian regime to resume offensive military activities in Idlib province".

"They [Iran] know what we expect and when they are ready to conform to that there's opportunity for settlement", Bolton said.

"We are very very early in the process of considering what we are going to do with New START or the INF treaty", he said, referring to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces pact.

Bolton insisted that recent US political turmoil over guilty pleas and verdicts against by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen - "doesn't have any effect" on his job.

"We said if there is such a sentence, then the document should also include a phrase stating that Americans should not interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries", Patrushev was quoted as saying.
