Mobile hacked -- over 2 million accounts exposed

T-Mobile is notifying some customers about a recent security breach

Still, it could be worse: T-Mobile claims that none of your financial data, social security numbers, or passwords were compromised. Where many companies drag their heels and wait months to share news of unauthorized access, T-Mobile let its customers know within just a few days.

T-Mobile has reported a security incident which may have led to the exposure of personal data belonging to approximately two million customers.

The company is in the process of notifying customers affected by the breach. However, the personal information that may have been taken includes names, billing zip codes, phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers, and account types (prepaid or postpaid). "And don't call a phone number included in the email". Those with additional concerns are encouraged to contact customer care by dialing 611, using two-way messaging in the T-Mobile app, online at MyT-Mobile.com or via iMessage through Apple Business Chat.

Speaking to Motherboard, a T-Mobile spokesperson said the cybersecurity incident affected roughly 3 percent of its 77 million customers, or approximately 2 - 2.5 million customers.

This is the latest in a long line of data breaches consumers have learned about over the past year affecting the credit-reporting agency Equifax, the travel website Orbitz, the ride-sharing company Uber, and other companies.

If you're among the customers whose personal data were compromised in this breach, even though the carrier claims no passwords were impacted, it's still a good idea to change yours.
