Giuliani to WashPost: Trump Asked About Pardoning Manafort, Decided to Hold Off

Paul Manafort

The verdict came after four days of deliberations during which the panel of six men and six women indicated it had difficulty reaching a consensus on 10 of the counts. A judge declared a mistrial on 10 other counts the jury could not agree on.

Rudy Giuliani said he advised President Donald Trump against considering granting Paul Manafort a pardon until at least after special counsel Robert Mueller has concluded his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

In tweets, Trump sought to contrast Manaforts posture with that of Michael Cohen, the presidents former lawyer and fixer, who on Tuesday entered a guilty plea in a Manhattan federal court on eight counts.

"Certainly Mr. Manafort got caught breaking the law, but he wouldn't have gotten caught if they weren't after President Trump", she said of the case, describing it later in the interview as a "witch hunt to try to find Russian collusion".

"We all tried to convince her to look at the paper trail, we laid it out in front of her again and again", Duncan said during an interview with Fox News host Shannon Bream.

So it would make sense for Trump and his legal team to send Manafort a message that he has nothing to worry about in the long run and that he'll be pardoned down the line.

According to Duncan, she and her peers worked to convince the lone dissenting juror, but ultimately failed to prevent a split verdict Tuesday.

"Yes, I think so", she said.

In his tweets, Trump seized on the counts on which Manafort escaped conviction.

In a Fox News interview on Wednesday, Paula Duncan, a self-described Trump supporter, said the juror, who has not been publicly identified, was not convinced that Manafort was guilty of all the charges. They sketched a portrait of a man who raked in millions in foreign lobbying and tried every means he could to hide the income in offshore bank accounts to evade federal taxes. "There was one holdout".

Prosecutors say Manafort avoided paying more than $16m in taxes over several years.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible Russian election interference has led to five convictions coming out of President Donald Trump's inner circle. Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to crimes that had nothing to do with Russia's campaign to sabotage the 2016 presidential race.

"It's called flipping, and it nearly ought to be illegal", the president added. "And I said, 'We're not doing this, ' " the juror said.

As part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's cyber attack on the United States 2016 presidential election and possible Trump camp collusion, the Manafort financial crimes case, some observers say, was to squeeze Manafort to turn on Trump and give up evidence on possible Russian collusion with the Trump camp.

She also said the jury "agreed to throw out the testimony" of Manafort protege Rick Gates, who pleaded guilty in Mueller's investigation and agreed to cooperate with investigators, and focus instead on the documents. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) think Attorney General Jeff Sessions is on his way out - and they seem ready to replace him.
