USA ambassador urges United Kingdom to back Trump on Iran nuke deal

Back us not Brussels on Iran, US ambassador tells Theresa May as he warns British businesses will lose trade

Woody Johnson, the USA ambassador to London, encouraged Britain to stick with the United States and ditch a "flawed" 2015 nuclear deal with Iran even as the European Union openly defied sanctions imposed by the Trump administration.

Britain remained open to talks with the United States on how to address concerns about Iran.

"When we were inking the nuclear deal, we stopped production of 20% fuel and deposited the excessive fuel in Russian Federation in almost 10 batches". "We are asking global Britain to use its considerable diplomatic power and influence and join us as we lead a concerted global effort toward a genuinely comprehensive agreement".

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has cancelled a visit to Iran, his press office said on Sunday, days after Baghdad announced it would comply with USA sanctions against Tehran.

"Until then, America is turning up the pressure and we want the United Kingdom by our side".

In the article, Johnson said the Trump administration is "determined to make sure they [the sanctions] are fully enforced". "Sometimes you need to take a stand against friends".

In relevant remarks in April, AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi said his organization enjoys the capability to restore 20-percent uranium enrichment at its Fordo nuclear facility in just 4 days if the 2015 nuclear deal is discarded by the other side.

"Any of these batches can be used for almost one year and therefore, we have 20% fuel for Tehran Reactor for at least 7 to 8 years", Spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said.

Woody Johnson said that America's "closest ally" should reverse its position.

Johnson said the Tehran regime had used the flow of money coming in to the country since the easing of sanctions not to improve the lives of ordinary Iranians but to beef up spending on the military and networks of proxy forces and terrorists.

While Washington was busy exiting the Iran nuclear deal in early May, Rabat had its own issues with the Islamic Republic.

Since then, Britain, France and Germany have sought to keep the deal alive, while Trump has prepared new sanctions, saying a broader and more balanced deal is needed.
