State of Emergency Declared in Advance of Charlottesville Anniversary

State Of Emergency Declared In Charlottesville For 'Unite the Right' Anniversary

Some accounts continued to publish around the time of August 12, 2017, white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, where one counter-protester was killed.

More injurious, he says, are the "hypocrisy and sheer stupidity of what they're doing downtown". During the protests, a vehicle drove into the crowd of people, as a result of which a woman was killed.

A statement released by Governor Ralph Northam said the goal behind the declaration is "to address the potential impacts of events in and around the City of Charlottesville and outside of Washington, D.C., on August 10-12, 2018". "[They] should be here as part of the community's voice as we move toward one unity", said Charlottesville Police Chief RaShall Brackney.

Instead, he and his organization plan to hold a rally with several hundred people at a park across form the White House.

Washington officials said on Thursday that police were ready for the rally as well as five planned counterprotests that could attract close to 2,000 people in all.

Bowser said safety should not be a concerned, but understood why some are anxious. The remarks sparked criticism from across the political spectrum as the Republican president refused to condemn the white nationalists. It was determined that he had purchased razors inside the business, which are among the city ordinance's prohibited items.

Guns, however, can still be legally carried.

It is not clear whether any white nationalists will come to Charlottesville this weekend, but officials said they were preparing for any contingency. Virginia State Police engaged Miska at 11:41 a.m., outside a business on Main Street.

Citizens and media outlets seeking information related to current events in the Charlottesville area are encouraged to follow social media accounts for the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia.

The Commonwealth state of emergency declaration mobilizes and funds state resources from the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Health, Virginia National Guard, and other state agencies that will be deployed to Charlottesville and Northern Virginia.

The governor of Virginia and the City of Charlottesville have declared a state of emergency in advance of this weekend, the one-year anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right rally.
