Manafort earned $60M from Ukrainian consulting work, prosecutors say

Former Trump campaign manager Manafort arrives for arraignment at U.S. District Court in Washington

When Yanukovych fled to Russia, Manafort and his business partner Richard Gates experienced a severe cash crunch, and the men allegedly began leveraging real estate to take out new loans, providing false or incomplete profit and loss statements and other data to banks.

Already, Judge T.S. Ellis III has confronted questions about whether prospective jurors can be impartial in the highly charged case.

Gates was named as a co-defendant in the initial indictment handed down against Manafort last October.

Manafort is accused of trying to hide tens of millions of dollars in Ukrainian political consulting fees and using that money to fund a lavish lifestyle. That leaves Manafort, 69, facing charges that could keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.

Prosecutors have lined up 35 witnesses and more than 500 pieces of evidence they say will show how Manafort earned more than $60 million (U.S.) from his Ukrainian work and then concealed a "significant percentage" of that money from the IRS.

On Tuesday morning, he was set to travel about 100 yards, from the Alexandria Detention Center to the Albert V Bryan courthouse in Virginia, for the first day of his trial on multiple felony charges including tax fraud, bank fraud and conspiracy. Manafort's wife, Kathleen, was sitting behind him in the courtroom.

A jury has been seated in the federal trial for Manafort, who served briefly as Trump's campaign manager in 2016.

Manafort actively conferred with his lawyers during the jury selection process, writing and passing notes.

He said Trump could help the public understand what is at stake in Mueller's investigation, which both Trump and Caputo have called a "witch hunt" aimed at ending his presidency.

Before joining Mr Trump's team in summer 2016, Paul Manafort had worked on a number of Republican presidential campaigns, including those of Gerald Ford in the mid-1970s and Ronald Reagan from 1978 to 1980.

In recent months, prosecutors in Mueller's office have produced detailed indictments charging at least Russian 25 individuals and three Russian companies with crimes related to election interference, including hacking into the emails of the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, money laundering and stealing US citizen's identities.

His lawyers are seeking to exclude evidence at trial that details Manafort's political lobbying work in Ukraine, saying it would be "irrelevant, prejudicial and unnecessarily time-consuming".

Unlike his former colleague Rick Gates, Mr Manafort has not co-operated with the special counsel investigation.

"The depth of the charges against Paul Manafort is such that at some point, the best decision for him will be to try to cut a deal", said Lisa Griffin, a former federal prosecutor who is now a law professor at Duke University. That trial, set in the District of Columbia, involves allegations that the longtime political consultant acted as an unregistered foreign agent for Ukrainian interests and made false statements to the United States government.
