Zimbabwe election in some cases 'totally disorganized'

Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe looks on during a press conference at his private residence nicknamed

"Zimbabwe's economy requires commercial bridge loans, donor support, relief on its huge dollar-denominated debt and, ultimately, an International Monetary Fund program", Exotix Capital said in an emailed research note.

Inside polling stations, voters were given three ballot papers: one for their presidential pick, another for member of parliament and a third for local councilor.

Chairperson, Justice Priscilla Chigumba says voting is progressing well across the country and 90% of the 10 985 polling stations opened on time this morning.

"There are shortcomings that we have to check". We removed Mugabe and they came to support when we said Mugabe must go.

A run-off will be held in September if neither candidate wins outright.

He said Mugabe - who on Sunday endorsed Chamisa in an extraordinary press conference - has the right to to express his opinion.

"To deny that the new dispensation was ushered in democratically and constitutionally and that Parliament including those in bed today with Mugabe who include Chamisa and team were part of the parliamentary impeachment process which led to the last-minute resignation of former president Mugabe is naivety and dishonesty of the first order".

After voting in the central city of Kwekwe, where bystanders were silent and grim-faced, Mnangagwa said he was committed to a Zimbabwe in which people have the "freedom to express their views, negative or positive".

The voting turnout was high and, in a break from the past, peaceful.

"I have no doubt that by end of day today we should be very clear as to an emphatic voice for change".

Both vice-presidents were slightly injured in the blast, as were several other top officials in the ruling Zanu-PF party.

The party controls the lower house of parliament, which is also up for election.

But Chamisa, 40, who has performed strongly on the campaign trail, hopes to tap into a young population that could vote for change. The EU has not yet made a conclusion on how to judge the vote, he said.

He again raised fraud allegations saying his victory would be assured if rigged ballots were excluded. She said this while giving an update on voting now underway and the situation at various polling stations across the country.

Zimbabwe's military generals shocked the world a year ago when they seized control and ushered Mr Mnangagwa to power after Mr Mugabe allegedly tried to position his wife Grace, 53, to be his successor.

Slow and rambling, the 94-year-old Mugabe spoke to reporters on Sunday with bitterness about his dramatic removal in November under military pressure and amid a ruling party feud.

Campaigning has been relatively unrestricted and peaceful compared with previous elections, and some analysts point to pressure for the vote to be judged credible to draw a line under the global isolation of the Mugabe era.

He hinted he would be backing Mnangagwa's rival Chamisa. The result will be announced within five days, authorities said.

The next government must tackle mass unemployment and an economy shattered by the Mugabe-backed seizure of white-owned farms, the collapse of agriculture, hyperinflation and an investment exodus.
