Horner blasts Renault after Verstappen retirement

Red Bull's Max Verstappen angry over F1 engine failure at Hungarian Grand Prix

As his vehicle slowed and he dropped down the order, the Dutchman opened up his radio channel to say: "Can I not just go ahead, I don't f--ing care if this engine blows up".

"I was 25 seconds clear of Daniel because of our starting positions and I felt ok so we could have easily been fifth - that is valuable points thrown away".

Verstappen, the youngest ever race victor in Formula One history, has an army of Dutch fans with thousands travelling to Budapest to cheer him on.

He feared they could suffer further disappointment down the line.

Verstappen had been livid on team radio when the failure occurred, first suggesting that he runs the vehicle until the engine "blows up", before screaming: "F**k!"

Team boss Christian Horner turned his sights on engine provider Renault. The Dutchman, who complained earlier this weekend the engine is costing the team over half a second on the straights alone, was running fifth when the issue occurred. "I suppose no surprise really", he added. Vandoorne was returning to the left of the track after the exit of Turn 4 but went too far and immediately swapped ends as he tried to turn in from off the circuit.

"We pay millions for a state of the art product and you can see quite clearly it is some way beneath that", he told Sky Sports.

"It's frustrating. I'll let Cyril [Abiteboul, Renault's managing director] come up with the excuses afterwards".

Renault powered the former champions to drivers' and constructor's titles for four years in a row between 2010 and 2013 but the relationship has frayed in the current V6 turbo hybrid era.

Red Bull's 20-year-old Dutch driver Max Verstappen was third on the timesheets, 0.088 slower than his teammate, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen fourth.

Red Bull have already experienced several race-stopping technical problems this year and an unimpressed Verstappen said it's "difficult to accept". The normal strategy would have been to change everything.
