Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri apologizes for 'miscommunication' with DeMar DeRozan

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

This is a drastic change from the other messages that DeRozan has been putting in his Instagram story saying that president Masai Ujiri lied to him about not being on the traded.

Toronto sent shockwaves around the National Basketball Association when it shipped DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs in a trade package for Kawhi Leonard.

But he said he regretted perhaps indicating to DeRozan that he wouldn't be traded. So generally speaking, the public has sided with DeMar DeRozan in his gripe with his former employer. "He's not going to leave, I'm telling you, '" The San Diego Union-Tribune's Jason Zeigler writes.

DeRozan had said emphatically in the past that he wanted to finish his career with the Raptors. "We spoke. I think maybe my mistake was talking about what we expected going forward from him, not necessarily about the trade", Ujiri added.

We all know about how much DeRozan loved his time as a Raptor. The post included a photo of Leonard with Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster.

A tweet from Ian Begley has reported that the Toronto Raptors are not done exploring their trade options for the summer, with the main objective being to shed salary space.

"When you have a chance to get a top-five player, which doesn't come very often, I think you have to jump on it", he said.

The Raptors sent DeRozan, Jakob Poetl and a 2019 first-round draft pick to San Antonio in exchange for Leonard and Danny Green. "He would still be in San Antonio", Ujiri said per Jeff McDonald of the Express News.

Toronto is hoping to pull a move similar to what the Oklahoma City Thunder were able to do with Paul George and convince Leonard to stay.

The report went on to suggest that Leonard's desire for fame further increased on a trip to China in August of 2017, where his personal team - including the now infamous Dennis Robertson a.k.a. Uncle Dennis - began to recognize the potential for a truly global brand after seeing countless fans in his jersey.
