Officer put on desk duty after fatal shooting sparks protests

According to Chicago police chief Fred Waller, the two officers involved in the shooting were on foot patrol and saw a man who "they thought might have been armed from the bulge around his waistband".

There has been a string of US police killings of black men that have sparked nationwide protests, but the name, age and race of the man shot were not released by police early Sunday.

The man broke free and ran from the officers, who believed "he appeared to be reaching for a weapon" and shot him, he said.

Guglielmi says a weapon was recovered at the scene but did not say where or whether it was on the man.

The city's Civilian Office of Police Accountability said it is committed to a thorough, objective and unbiased investigation of the shooting. Black Youth Project interviewed one of Augustus' friends at the barbershop, who said he was a quiet and good man.

Witness Gloria Rainge told the Chicago Sun-Times that officers instructed the victim not to sell loose cigarettes, which he denied doing.

Officials said three or four officers suffered minor injuries and one patrol vehicle was damaged, and four protestors were arrested. The officer has not been identified.

The protest ended about 10:30 p.m. and the officer involved will be placed on desk duty while the incident is investigated, officials said.

There has been a string of United States police killings of black men that have sparked nationwide protests, but the name, age and race of the man shot were not released by police early Sunday (local time). None of the officers were injured.

Nearly immediately after the shooting, a crowd of onlookers and activists descended on the scene. Some shouted "murderers" and chanted "no justice, no peace".

Hours after the shooting, dozens of people gathered to protest the man's death.

The man, who was in his 30s, died after being shot in the back at least five times by a female officer, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report.

By Saturday evening in tensions escalated between angry residents and baton-wielding officers. "I haven't seen a police shooting scene this intense since the [Laquan] McDonald video release". In 2015, protesters blocked Interstate 94 after police released a graphic dash-cam video showing an officer shooting Laquan McDonald, 17. He is then shot by one of the officers.

Van Dyke was charged with murder.
