Belgium vs. England - Football Match Report

England manager Gareth Southgate applauds fans after the World Cup semi-final against Croatia

The third-place match was dropped from the European championship by UEFA following the 1980 tournament but has remained part of the World Cup calendar despite complaints.

The Tottenham striker remains the overwhelming favourite to win the Golden Boot with six goals, although he admitted his frustration at failing to find the net in England's final three games. The hat trick might be a tall order under normal circumstances, but England's defense couldn't stand tall enough to stop the dead legs of Croatia from putting two past them.

The "Three Lions" and the "Red Devils" met in the group stages, with what saw as the "B team" for both sides taking to the pitch.

Both Belgium and England started the tournament in Group G. The two teams previously played each other in a group round match on June 28.

It was an anticlimactic way for both these teams - who have given their fans some thrilling moments in Russian Federation - to end the World Cup but Belgium leave with a deserved piece of history. England seem happy to absorb the pressure until the whistle.

The kick-off time for the match is 3 pm. Eden Hazard is controlling play in the final two thirds of the field. This is a young side that overachieved and heaping a mountain of pressure onto their shoulders to go all the way at Euro 2020 just because they made it to the last four here is the last thing these players need to continue their development.

Seven matches in 26 days after a long season could have spelled a sluggish end to the summer for the Three Lions, yet they took the space afforded by Belgium and remained faithful to their passing game, dominating with 57 per cent of possession and nearly two-thirds as many passes as Roberto Martinez's men. He glances up, spots Meunier in the box and delivers an inch-perfect cross. But no one was at the end of it.

23' - CHANCE! Clever run from Sterling as he latches onto Dier's long ball before laying it off to Kane. Kane's shot goes wide.

GK Thibaut Courtois, 7 - Now the most capped Belgian goalkeeper ever with 65.

The old classic "you never know" line will do little to calm the nerves of Chelsea fans hoping to keep their star man from the clutches of Real Madrid.

17' - Lucky for England!

15' - Close for England!

John Stones miskicked a Lukaku pass through the heart of the defence and when it reached Kevin de Bruyne, Jordan Pickford did well to save his deflected shot. Had a shot from distance blocked but did well in a controlling role.

9' - nearly a second for Belgium!

DF Harry Maguire, 6 - Not his best defensive display, even if there is no shame in being tormented by Hazard and De Bruyne. Belgium take an early lead. Pickford had a brilliant game once again and a delightful counter from Belgium was stopped from becoming the goal of the tournament by the Everton goalkeeper's outstretched hand.

In the words of Guardian writer, Paul Doyle, "Here come the national anthems, which, in many countries' cases, tend to be more arrogant and offensive than any tune written by a pair of comedians".
