Angelique Kerber beats Serena Williams to win first Wimbledon title

Duchesses make first joint appearance as Meghan cheers friend Serena at Wimbledon

Thus, by the transitive property, Serena Williams doesn't do moral victories.

And after a shattering quarter-final exit at this year's Roland Garros, which saw his world ranking slump to its lowest in 12 years, the Serb even considered sitting out Wimbledon where he has been champion in 2011, 2014 and 2015.

Kerber made just five unforced errors compared to Williams' 24 as the German reversed the result of the 2016 final.

In the first title-match between two thirtysomethings at Wimbledon since Virginia Wade defeated Betty Stove in 1977, Kerber became the fourth over 30 to win a Grand Slam since the turn of the century, along with Pennetta (2015 US Open), Li (2014 Australian Open) and S.Williams (10 Slam titles).

But there are no excuses to be made, not because of toddlers or conditioning or rust.

Kerber had endured a significant slump a year ago after wining her previous major titles at the Australian and US Opens in 2016.

Until then, her experience of the Slams had not got beyond the first week.

Kerber was so consistent. Markle and her sister-in-law Kate Middleton participated in a standing ovation as the players walked onto the court.

As for her own progress on the court, Serena claims she is still working her way back, but she believes the final provides a chance to hit peak form.

Williams, however, struggled to control the game as Kerber began the rally.

Kerber and Williams have always shared a mutual respect, and it's a joy to watch them play each other.

The moment Angelique Kerber won.

So, how does the former No. 1 tennis champ feel about the Duchesses watching on for her big game? If returns and recoveries are a process, Serena is way ahead of pace.

@serenawilliams will be holding a trophy again soon-she's got the greatest one waiting at home for her -and our family knows she'll win many more trophies, too.

Making a mockery of Wimbledon's decision to seed her a lowly 25th, Williams has powered through the draw, getting stronger with each match. It wasn't as successful against Kerber.

That's not going to work against an opponent of Kerber's quality.

And while it's tempting to invoke Serena's maternity leave as an excuse for today's performance, doing so is a disservice to both her and Kerber.

"Yeah, it's been a insane 10 months", she said on Thursday. Circumstances don't define us. But when she looks back on this fortnight she will surely be flooded with overwhelming pride.

It was said through tears, with a tinge of regret, as many statements by Grand Slam runner-ups are.

"I entered Wimbledon just wanting to win some matches".
