United States salmonella outbreak: 'Do not eat Honey Smacks,' shoppers told

FDA: Retailers cannot legally sell Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal following recall

Do not eat any Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal, regardless of package size or best-by date.

A sign hangs outside the Kellogg's factory near Manchester, Britain March 7, 2016. Infections continued to climb, despite efforts by the FDA and CDC to warn consumers and retailers that the cereal has been recalled and should not be consumed or sold.

The Food and Drug Administration says retails still can not legally sell Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal following a recall.

The agency is urging consumers to avoid Honey Smacks, a sugary puffed wheat cereal which has been the subject of a recall by the company since mid-June. The CDC said illnesses after June 19 may not have been reported yet because it takes an average of two to four weeks between the time a person becomes ill and when their illness is reported.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that, since their last update on June 14th, new cases were reported in Florida and Colorado, and an additional 27 people have fallen ill.

The agency has said that it has found salmonella stains in unopened and leftover samples of Honey Smacks. "The FDA has learned that some retailers are still selling this product".

Health officials said people get sick from Salmonella 12 to 72 hours after ingesting the germ, and experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Thoroughly wash the container with warm, soapy water before using it again, to remove harmful germs that could contaminate other food.
