Southgate forced England to face up to Iceland debacle

Gareth Southgate has nation preparing for Waistcoat Wednesday

England fans are being urged to dig out their old waistcoats for the World Cup semi-final on "Waistcoat Wednesday" in honour of newly-appointed national treasure Gareth Southgate.

Recall that on the way to the semi-finals England in the quarterfinal match defeated Sweden (2:0), and Croatia knocked out of the tournament (2:2, penalties - 4:3).

So what are you waiting for?

The Three Lions are two wins away from getting their hands on the World Cup trophy for the first time since 1966, and Southgate's men are, so far, exceeding their own expectations at this summer's tournament in Russian Federation.

"We needed Churchill, but we got Iain Duncan-Smith", an unnamed defender, later identified as Southgate, was quoted as saying in a 2004 book by Joe Lovejoy.

"I think we can beat Croatia, get in the final and anything can happen".

After winning back-to-back penalty shootouts to reach their second-ever (1998) World Cup semifinal, Croatia's tank will be closer to empty than any of the four sides still competing in Russian Federation, but Modric believes they can dig deep once more and qualify for the final.

England looked drained of all inspiration and confidence and their manager Roy Hodgson quit on the spot.

"The style of play has changed and so have attitudes".

"No one wants to go home".

"At the beginning we were working together with the lads and trying to sell them the vision of what's possible, what we're looking to achieve in the long term".

"After the Iceland game we knew things needed to change and there have been a lot of changes since that moment", said midfielder Eric Dier, who was substituted at halftime in the game. Belgium, I thought, did great against Brazil - them going out was a great bonus for us.

Asked what is was all about, a slightly bemused Southgate said: "That's exactly what I asked our fitness coach a well, 'What is that all about?'".

Winning the World Cup for the first time in 52 years has now transformed from fantasy into a distinct possibility, and Southgate thinks the rise of social media would only amplify the reaction if his England were to upset the odds and make it all the way.
