At least one dead after helicopter crashes into residential Virginia neighborhood, sparking a fire

Photos shared by the Virginia State police department showed extensive damage to the residential structure, with the worst of the destruction occurring on the second floor. The impact of the crash caused a fire in the townhomes in Williamsburg, CBS Richmond affiliate WTVR reports.

The crash is under investigation, but state police released a statement saying "federal, state and local police, with the assistance of the Williamsburg Fire Department, are working to locate and identify the pilot of the helicopter".

The Federal Aviation Administration tweeted that Aviation Safety Inspectors arrived in Williamsburg at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

A 91-year-old woman who died after a helicopter crashed into her condominium in Bristol Commons Sunday was an avid reader and world traveler, according to her relatives. Neighbors told the Daily Press that they heard sounds resembling a helicopter crash.

"The way my house shook - it shook and shook", Sweeney said.

Donald Johnson told the newspaper he was 10 feet away from the crash when it struck his apartment building.

The crash happened near the College of William and Mary Dillard Complex, prompting an alert from the university. I just walked out and looked and got out, I was afraid it would blow up'.

Doug Brazy with the National Transportation Safety Board also spoke at the news conference.
