As of Tuesday, according to CNN, an estimated 80 million people in the USA remained under heat advisories and warnings. That rain may turn into a full-out thunderstorm, so plan your outdoor activities accordingly.

"This will be the most significant heat event in the past few years", said the national forecaster. "Overnight low temperatures are expected to be in the low twenties, except high teens in some rural areas, providing little or no relief from the heat".

In the Eastern Townships region southeast of Montreal, four deaths are under investigation to determine if they are related to the extreme heat.

Mylene Drouin, the Montreal Regional Director of Public Health, confirmed the deaths were due to heat.

In Montreal, police and firefighters continued to go door to door in areas identified as having people considered at high risk: those with chronic illness or mental-health problems, those who live alone and people without air conditioning at home. The city has extended its pool hours and opened its seven cooling centers, which provide air-conditioned spaces and cold drinks.

According to Canadian Weather's advisory, the humidity index in southern Quebec will reach near 40 on Wednesday, but conditions will grow "even more uncomfortable" on Thursday, when it is forecast to reach 43.

In Toronto and Ottawa, temperatures have remained well above 30 C since Friday.

Families of some patients in Montreal's hospitals have spoken out, saying that not all hospital floors in the city are air conditioned.

At least eight people in the US and Canada have died in the past week due to the intense heat wave affecting parts of North America.
