Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin could meet without aides, Kremlin says

US congressmen meet Russian officials in St. Petersburg

Relations between Russia and the United States have sunk to their lowest point in decades amid USA sanctions over Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and Russia's action in Ukraine.

Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told a delegation of USA lawmakers he hoped their visit to Moscow would help restore relations between the two legislatures, Interfax news agency reported.

Asked by reporters whether he was considering - as has been reported - dropping Washington's opposition to the 2014 land grab, Trump said: "We're going to have to see".

A the head of a US congressional delegation visiting Russian Federation said Tuesday he hopes for "a new day" in repairing relations between Russian Federation and the U.S.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, back to a camera, listens to U.S. Sen.

"I think the resumption of the inter-parliamentary dialogue is very timely in the run-up to the Helsinki meeting between the two presidents due in two weeks", Russia's top diplomat said. "Perhaps not a utopia - I'm still looking for the utopia in the world - but a better day", Shelby told Russian's lower house speaker Vyacheslav Volodin on Tuesday.

Putin "feels absolutely comfortable in all formats that are comfortable for his interlocutors", Peskov said, adding that the Kremlin "doesn't rule out" a private meeting between the two presidents. Left unsaid was that the move would also likely require removing top Russian lawmakers from a U.S.travel "blacklist" imposed a year ago.

Putin has "repeatedly stated and explained that Crimea can not be and will never be on the agenda because it is an inseparable part of Russia", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
