Trump interviews 4 for Supreme Court, 2-3 more to go

For Collins, who will be a key vote, it comes down to upholding precedent. Collins also said she encouraged Trump to "broaden" his list beyond the 25 potential nominees already on it.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters in Ashland, Kentucky, on Monday that "it's probably going to be close; I think there will be a big national, campaign rage". But during his Senate confirmation hearing, he said he accepts Roe v. Wade as "the law of the land".

On Sunday, Leonard Leo, an outside adviser to Trump on judicial nominations, said he expected Trump to select a nominee who is mindful of precedent but who is also more "originalist and textualist". Trump said previous year he'd asked for input from the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation on potential Supreme Court justices; Casey called them "hard-right organizations".

Front-runners, according to two people familiar with the process, include D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh, 7th Circuit Judge Amy Coney Barrett, and Thomas Hardiman, who was a finalist to be Trump's first high court appointee as well as a fellow judge on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals with Trump's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry.

Trump's comments come as a crucial moderate Republican senator said any nominee to the Court who said they would vote to overturn Roe would not be "acceptable".

"That will happen, and that'll happen automatically, in my opinion, because I am putting pro-life [anti-abortion] justices on the court", Trump said at a presidential debate against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

President Trump has begun interviewing possible nominees for the Supreme Court seat that will become open when Justice Anthony Kennedy retires at the end of the month.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Sen.

Like the others, I too believe that the new nominee will be female - and I even have a potential candidate in mind: Judge Margaret Ryan.

"This is a very different Supreme Court discussion because everyone in the Senate who is going to vote on this knows this could change the balance of power". And the senator still has yet to explicitly say that a prospective justice's hostility to Roe could sway her vote, per the New York Times.

"I want to be clear that a vote for any of the proposed nominees on Trump's list is a vote to overturn Roe v. Wade", said Ezra Levin, co-founder of the protest group Indivisible.

"What's important in addition to increasing diversity is how that person would actually interpret law", Chu said. Collins hit back against this suggestion, pointing to her bipartisan record in the Senate and thorough vetting of Supreme Court picks.

"They're going to get beaten so badly", Trump said.
