Leftist seen as Mexico's next president after massive win

Mexico election

Presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador talks to reporters as he departs after casting his ballot at a polling station during the presidential election in Mexico City, Mexico, July 1, 2018.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also congratulated the new Mexican leader, saying the two countries "share common goals, strong people to people ties, and a mutually beneficial trading relationship that is the envy of the world".

Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador - a known opponent to Trump policies - is now slated to be headed for the win.

Once results showed his margin of victory on Sunday, and mindful of accusations that his instincts cleave toward authoritarianism, Lopez Obrador quickly sought to calm nerves about his presidency.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been openly antagonistic to Mexico over trade and migration since his own presidential campaign. Lopez Obrador was the runner-up in the last two elections.

Jose Antonio Meade, candidate for the ruling PRI, announced shortly after the first exit polls were given, at 8pm in Mexico City, that he accepted his loss.

Lopez Obrador, who heads the National Regeneration Movement, or Morena, says he plans to cut government personnel and salaries and prevent funds from being squandered through corruption.

Mr Anaya said he had already phoned the victor to wish him well.

Lopez Obrador, a 64-year-old former mayor of Mexico City, won more than 53 per cent of votes in Sunday's election, preliminary results showed. He also wants to reverse key reforms made by President Enrique Pena Nieto's administration that opened the country's energy industry to foreign companies.

Lopez Obrador supporters began wild celebrations in Mexico City, cruising up and down the central Paseo de la Reforma boulevard honking horns to the tune of "Viva Mexico!" and waving Mexican flags from vehicle windows and moon roofs.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has cast his vote in elections to choose his successor.

Retired teacher Susana Zuniga beamed and said the country was experiencing a moment similar to the Mexican Revolution a century ago. "Eradicating corruption will be the principal mission", he said.

"Peace and tranquility are the fruit of justice", Lopez Obrador said as he pledged "a plan of reconciliation and peace for Mexico".

The polling firm Consulta Mitofsky predicted Morena allies would take between 56 and 70 seats in the 128-member Senate and between 256 and 291 spots in the 500-seat lower house.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has led opinion polls throughout a campaign marred by more than 100 murders of politicians by suspected drug gangs.

How much heft Lopez Obrador can bring to bear both domestically and internationally will depend significantly on his control of Congress, where no party has held an outright majority since 1997.

Sunday's elections for posts at every level of government are Mexico's largest ever and have become a referendum on corruption, graft and other tricks used to divert taxpayer money to officials' pockets and empty those of the country's poor.

The National Electoral Institute said 98,854 of them mailed ballots by Saturday, more than twice the amount of Mexicans overseas that voted in the last election.

His allies are warning even before Sunday's presidential vote that there better not be any amusing business.
