Melania Trump Visits Second Child Detention Site Without Controversy

Sarat said that if Melania Trump really cared about the children, she would listen to their families to learn why they are fleeing their homes to the U.S.

First lady Melania Trump arrives in Tucson at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, on Thursday en route to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility.

The first lady's visit to Phoenix stemmed from the crisis surrounding President Trump's "zero-tolerance" prosecution policy of migrant families who cross the U.S. -Mexico border.

On Thursday, the first lady toured a short-term detention facility in Tucson where she met children as young as five at a center housing migrants from Guatemala or Honduras, all of whom had been there less than 72 hours.

"I'm here to support you and give my help, whatever I can" on "behalf of children and the families", she said to officials.

The overall goal of the Arizona visit, Grisham said, is to provide insight to Trump as she continues to "encourage family reunification" and urge Congress "to fix our broken immigration system".

The First Lady deboarded her plane in Tuscon, Ariz. on Thursday afternoon, exactly one week after she stepped off a plane in Texas wearing that now-infamous $39 Zara jacket with the words "I really don't care".

"It's a jacket. There was no hidden message", Grisham said at the time.

On Tuesday, a federal judge in California ordered a temporary halt to the separation of families at the border and ruled that children taken from their parents must be reunited within 30 days.

"The rhetoric we hear from the other side on the issue, as on many others, has become radicalized", Sessions said (via the Los Angeles Times). Melania Trump donned sneakers, white trousers and a black sweater.

Her husband, President Donald Trump, undercut the no-message message by tweeting that his wife was saying she really doesn't care about the "fake news" media.

The first lady was also expected to meet with local members of the community, including a rancher.

On the way to McAllen, Grisham told a small group of reporters traveling with the first lady that the trip was Mrs. Trump's idea - not her husband's or that of their staffs. The first trip was overshadowed by a jacket she wore.

Trump visited with some of the 55 children at the shelter, about 10% of whom had been separated from their parents at a border intake facility.

But the states say his order is riddled with caveats and fails to reunite parents and children who have already been torn apart.
