Have the Celtics made another offer for Kawhi Leonard?

But if only one of LeBron and George signs in Los Angeles and the Spurs won't trade Leonard there, that lone Laker could be stuck on a middling team still too young to compete. Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George, who has previously expressed a desire to sign with the Lakers, is a free agent, but he could certainly re-sign with OKC. The Lakers could even acquire a future first-rounder from a team that's looking to unload salary for the 2018-2019 season, and that draft pick could be used in a deal for Leonard, according to ESPN.

LeBron is reportedly "hesitant" to be the first superstar to sign with the Lakers, and would want to make his decision quickly in free agency.

The Spurs haven't ruled out trading Leonard to the Lakers or any other destination. It's unclear, however, when the Celtics reportedly made the offer referenced in Wednesday's ESPN report.

With NBA free agency due to begin this weekend, the Los Angeles Lakers are operating on multiple fronts.

"He's under contract for another year", Buford said. If he's serious about his employment with the team, swinging a deal for Leonard would make him a man of his word. That could drive up the price for Leonard, an unusual scenario for a player so close to free agency (and coming off an injury that cost him 73 games last season). Organizations won't offer as much value for Leonard if they know he will be only a one-year rental.

The Lakers would improve their position in the Western Conference hierarchy if they are able to sign by LeBron and Kawhi this summer, but there's no guarantee they would overthrow the Golden State Warriors.

The race for Leonard is on, and if the Spurs play their hand wisely, an ugly situation could end up with them bringing in a haul of assets to jumpstart a rebuild.
