Swiss players escape bans over controversial goal celebrations

Now, it's Switzerland stealing the limelight after their 2-1 win against Serbia saw Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri celebrating with "Albanian Eagle" gestures - which could land them in trouble, according to the Independent.

After scoring against Serbia on Friday the players appeared to make an eagle symbol with their hands alluding to the double-headed eagle on the Albanian flag.

Federation Internationale de Football Association had opened disciplinary proceedings against the Swiss players in the immediate aftermath and the trio have been warned over their "unsporting behaviour contrary to the principles of fair-play" in future matches.

Serbia has refused to recognize Kosovo's independence, which was won after North Atlantic Treaty Organisation intervened militarily in 1999, launching airstrikes against Serb forces battling separatists in the province and bombing targets as far away as the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

Xhaka's parents are originally from Kosovo and they are of Albanian heritage.

Xhaka's father spent three and a half years as a political prisoner in Yugoslavia, while Shaqiri was born in Yugoslavia before emigrating to Switzerland as a child.

Lichtsteiner also made the gesture during the match. Maybe there were situations like this, like the one [between Serbia and Switzerland], where the referee should have chose to at least see it, but it's in their hands.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka, two star Swiss footballers, risk being sidelined.

Krstajic told Serbian journalists that German referee Felix Brych should be tried for war crimes in The Hague for failing to award his team a penalty. The Kosovo War ended in 1999 and independence from Serbia was declared in 2008.

FIFA's disciplinary panel could impose only a fine and warning before Switzerland plays Costa Rica on Wednesday.

Croatia's FA was fined 13,000 Swiss francs after its fans were involved in fights and throwing of objects during the same game.

Shaqiri said his celebration in the Kaliningrad stadium was "just emotion" but added he was not allowed to talk about politics.

"I think about this, I don't want to speak", said Shaqiri. Shaqiri also posted photos of his playing boots with a Kosovo flag on one heel and the Swiss flag on the other heel.
