Lump on face turned out to be worm crawling under woman's skin

A Lump Moving Across a Woman's Face Was a Parasitic Worm Crawling Under Her Skin

An Oregon woman made headlines earlier this year when she yanked a worm from her inflamed eye, National Geographic reported.

It was a parasite - and it was living inside her face.

A 32-year-old Russian woman went to the doctor after a mysterious lump moved around her face over the course of two weeks - and she made a horrifying discovery. After 10 days, it moved to her top lip, causing some seriously intense swelling. As this worm remains typically infertile inside the human beings, the solution to these types of cases is generally removing the worm by a surgery.

"She documented these changes by taking photographs of her face (i.e., "selfies")," added Kartashev, who wrote in to describe the case along with parasitologist Fernando Simon of the University of Salamanca in Spain.

Two weeks after she noticed the lump, the woman finally chose to have it checked.

The woman is believed to have picked up the parasite when she traveled to a rural area outside of the Russian capital of Moscow, where she was bitten by mosquitoes.

Here's something uncomfortable to think about: A worm moving around under the skin on your face. The woman recalled being bitten "frequently" by mosquitoes during her travels.

That's because humans aren't its preferred host - it usually lives in carnivores, such as cats, dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes and sea lions.

A 32-year-old woman in Russian Federation took a selfie when she noticed a lump under her left eye.

A physical examination showed a superficial moving along the lump.

It gets transmitted via mosquitoes and that's how it gets into humans, but the consequences are far less dire than other parasite infections.

Because the worms typically remain infertile in humans, the cure is usually to remove the parasite through a small incision.

The lead author of the report in NEJM, Vladimir Kartashev, an infectious disease expert at Rostov State Medical University in Rostov-na-Donu, Russia, told The Washington Post in an email that D. repens is an "emerging disease" in the western part of the former Soviet Union and certain parts of Europe.

But according to the report in Parasites & Vectors, if continues to spread, it's possible that it could be introduced in the U.S. by infected dogs who come into the country.
