European Union leaders to hold mini-migration summit as crisis festers

Frank-Walter Steinmeier

German Chancellor Angela Merkel tempered expectations for a Sunday meeting with other European Union leaders about the ongoing migrant issue.

In addition to the 384 million euros in aid for Jordan, Germany is also providing it with a $100 million credit line to help it cope with the requirements of the International Monetary Fund reforms, Merkel said.

Her hardline interior minister Horst Seehofer on Monday gave her a two-week ultimatum to reach such deals, threatening he would otherwise defy her and shutter German borders to these migrants, a move that would likely end their coalition.

If Seehofer makes good on his threat, Merkel could be forced to sack him, thereby triggering the collapse of her coalition.

Merkel said Germany remains committed to the Paris climate accord fighting global warming but acknowledged that the country still needs to do more to curb emissions, particularly in the transport sector, if it wants to meet its own goals.

Some 16 EU leaders are set to tackle the migration issue at a mini-summit on Sunday, ahead of a critical full European leaders summit later in the week.

According to her, the reform of the Eurozone was the most hard issue in their with Macron negotiations.

"Her government is in trouble because of the controversy over immigration - [rival political parties] are trying to put pressure on Merkel to close the borders", Ms Scheller said.

More than 2,300 children have been taken from their parents since early May, a practice loudly decried by rights groups and United States politicians from both main parties.

"When crimes such as theft, drug dealing and sexual assault are not reported or only to a very small degree because the victims are ashamed, then those crimes do not become part of the statistics", Pazderski said in Berlin. "It has all the skills and the means to do so", she said. A sea route to Greece used by hundreds of thousands in 2015 was shut in 2016 by an agreement between the European Union and Turkey, and the other main route across the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy has also tapered as Libyan factions cracked down on people-smuggling.

"National solutions don't work", Macron said, referring to Hungary and Italy, who have an anti-migrant approach.

Lebanese officials say the country's economy is collapsing and are urging Syrians to return home to areas that have relatively stabilized.

"The meeting on Sunday is a consultation and working meeting at which there will be no concluding statement", Merkel told reporters in Beirut with Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

In recent years, global donors have tried to shift from humanitarian to development aid, particularly in Jordan, hoping to encourage refugees to remain in the Middle East.

Before heading to Lebanon, Merkel visited an air base where German troops are deployed as part of an global coalition against the so-called Islamic State group.

Kurz told daily German tabloid Bild on Saturday: "we would do everything possible to protect our borders ... including border protection at the Brenner" - one of the main Austrian-Italian border crossings.
