Cristiano Ronaldo broke Ferenc Puskas' record for the most global goals by a European player with his winning goal for Portugal against Morocco in their 2018 World Cup group match on Wednesday.

Iran fell 1-0 to Spain on Wednesday, days after defeating Morocco in its World Cup opener.

Amidst the wild celebrations of fans, after Portugal managed to earn a draw against Spain, a young boy stood with tears in his eyes.

Despite their battling display, Morocco will rue the unforgivable defending that made all their subsequent good work irrelevant.

Both sides then went on to win their second games, Portugal against Morocco and Spain against Iran, by a score of one goal to nil, meaning that both their points and goal totals are identical going into their final group games.

The Portugal captain met Joao Moutinho's cross to head home in the fourth minute at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, sealing a 1-0 win for the reigning European champions.

Apart from Ronaldo, with his astonishing tally of 85 goals from 152 internationals, there is plenty more natural talent in the squad which has so far failed to manifest itself.

The much-talked about plan of a Portugal in possession, spreading the play and dictating the tempo, never materialised.

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed the reason behind his new "lucky" goatee, explaining after his man of the match performance against Morocco that he had the new face fuzz because of a bet with teammate Ricardo Quaresma.

The veteran forward notched his third goal in two games when Ramin Rezaeian's attempted clearance bounced off the Spaniard's leg and into the net in the 54th minute. VAR was called into action and showed an Iranian player was offside and the goal was disallowed.

Portugal reached the semi-finals in 2006, losing to a Zinedine Zidane penalty against France, but exited in the last 16 four years later before crashing out at the group stage in Brazil.
