PM told to come clean on funding source for NHS boost

The National Health Service is to receive an extra £20 billion ($26.5bn) a year by 2023 as a 70th "birthday present", Theresa May has claimed.

There isn't any extra guaranteed money available as a result of ending our payments to the European Union budget, because those savings are likely to be more than offset by other costs associated with Brexit.

May said the extra funding will help "secure" the NHS's future.

Both are considered essential to the sustainability of the NHS, but the increase announced only applied to front-line NHS services such as hospitals, Global Positioning System and mental health care.

"We can not continue to put a sticking plaster on the NHS budget each year", she said.

Prime Minister Theresa May has announced a £20bn NHS funding increase over the next five years.

Finally, Hammond also has the option of leaving taxes as they are and increasing borrowing instead.

Speaking on the BBC's Today programme this morning, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt admitted that the spending plans, which Mrs May has claimed deliver on the Leave campaign's pledge of £350m more a week for the NHS after Brexit, would cost the taxpayer more.

But the Sky Data poll found 47% of people do not think there will be "Brexit dividend", compared to 34% who did.

Mrs May has asked NHS England boss Simon Stevens to help draw up the plan with the input of senior staff working in the health service.

As health professionals experiencing the effect of chronic under-investment in our health service we welcome the Prime Minister's pledge of greater investment for the NHS.

"That's not just me that's saying that, but we've had the health committee chair Dr Sarah Wollaston calling it tosh and criticising the UK Government for treating the public like fools and of course we've had the Institute for Fiscal Studies saying there's no Brexit dividend". But it's right that we must recognise the impact social care has on the NHS, and the way in which these work together.

Any increase in funding for the health service in England is reflected in the Barnett formula, used to distribute Treasury funds across the devolved nations.

The Shadow Health Secretary says Theresa May hasn't got "a sensible explanation as to where this money's coming from" for her boost in NHS funding. So it is with some concern that we read the Prime Minister's plans to fund this latest investment through a so-called "Brexit dividend".

'However, we will be scrutinising the detail of this new package of funding to assess the degree to which it will make a real difference in both the short and long term to frontline patient care'. "As a country, we need to contribute a bit more in a fair and balanced way".

They said they wanted their money to be spent, not on subscriptions to European Union membership, but on our vital public services like the NHS. "And we want to listen to people about how we do that, and the chancellor will bring forward the full set of proposals before the spending review".

Isn't it nice to have the whole picture?
