Barty faces Konta in Nottingham final

WTA International- Nature Valley Open

Last year's runner-up Konta avenged her defeat at the Nottingham Tennis Centre against defending champion Donna Vekic, 6-2, 6-3, on Saturday, setting up a contest for the Elena Baltacha Trophy with Australian top seed Ashleigh Barty, who beat World No18 Naomi Osaka, 6-3, 6-4.

Konta next faces Donna Vekic of Croatia, who beat her in the Nottingham final 12 months ago.

The World No.17 flipped the result of last year's quarterfinal match in Nottingham, which was won by Konta in straight sets as she made a run to the final for the first time.

Neither player had dropped a set prior to their meeting, but an aggressive Barty took the opener courtesy of a solitary break.

"It is never easy with a rain delay, so I am very happy to have battled through, to keep my mind on the task at hand and do the best I can with the conditions". She responded to the umpire by saying: "I am a human being, no a robot". "It's been building and building and getting better and better each match".

Konta appeared close to winning by default at the end of the first set when Vekic received treatment for a back injury before the rain forced both players off court to give Vekic a slight respite.

Barty's level did eventually dip at the closing stages of the second set as her supreme level on serve was miles from where it usually is, but it felt like the Australian was simply surviving on court when she was taking heavy blows from Konta's forehand side, particularly that shot going into Barty's forehand, and the Brit's play in the forecourt was pivotal in her securing the second set.

But she is wary of her Aussie opponent's strengths on grass.

Konta and Vekic were halted by rain, giving Barty a recovery edge.

"She loves this surface and she's very vocal about it". She's improved a lot and is playing very well since she's come back. "I have really fond memories of it and always feel like I've played well here".
