'Our hearts break': law enforcement react after 2 Wyandotte County deputies shot

One of two Kansas officers shot during inmate transport dies

Deputy Scott Wood was shot seven times while trying to stop a robbery in Kansas City in 2015, but he returned to duty.

The shootings all happened Thursday afternoon.

Wynadotte Co. Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, was identified as the deputy who died Friday.

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic shooting of two sheriff's deputies outside the Wyandotte County Courthouse earlier this morning".

"We are praying for our friends at the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office, their families, friends and our entire blue family".

The Olathe Police Department, Raymore Police Department in Missouri and the Jackson County Sheriff's Officer in Missouri tweeted similar heartfelt messages. The surviving officer was critically injured. Her condition was not available.

The suspect is in the operating room at the same hospital, Zeigler said.

Authorities say the two deputies were transporting the inmate to a hearing in downtown Kansas City when the suspect somehow got ahold of a weapon.

The shooting is under investigation. That deputy's name has not been released. The courthouse is located at 710 N. 7th Street.

The shooting occurred outside the courthouse annex, near the area where inmates are transported. No other information has been released about the deputies or the suspect.

"At first it looked like it was a harmless fight", witness Matthew Sinno said. The department is leading the investigation.

However, although he was put in the Jackson County Jail for the 2017 murder, Fielder was still going through the Wyandotte County Court system due to previous charges for carjacking. The suspect was also struck in the shooting.

Both Rohrer and the other deputy were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Lionel Colon said when officers arrived, they were shot at, so they returned fire.

Kansas City police have fatally shot a woman who barricaded herself in a shed for hours after she was seen outside with a sword. Police Officer Zac Blair says authorities are reviewing surveillance video.
