Second Kansas Police Officer Dies After Inmate Shooting - Timothy Meads

Second deputy dies in shooting in Kansas

Wyandotte County sheriff's Maj.

Bailiff said the inmate was being taken across the street from the jail, to the services building, for a court hearing.

Rohrer, 35, died shortly after the shooting.

Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, a seven-year veteran of the agency, died from his injuries.

The suspect also was shot and was operated on at the hospital.

Kansas City, Kan., Police Chief Terry Zeigler said homicide detectives are working hard on the case and will be meeting in the coming days with the Wyandotte County District Attorney's office, but he didn't know when charges would be filed. Investigators said the inmate may have grabbed a weapon from one of the deputies during a struggle late Friday morning.

"This is a courthouse building, there is video". He had been with the force for seven years and leaves two young children, Wyandotte county sheriff's Maj Kelli Bailiff said.

Bailiff said the investigation into what happened is continuing, but the officers followed the established protocol for transporting inmates.

Both officers were with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department.

Zeigler said authorities were withholding the inmate's name until he had been formally charged, which is expected to happen next week. Kelli Bailiff said at the press conference.

The investigation is being handled by the Kansas City Police Department.

No other details were released about the suspect, including his condition. "Praying for Wyandotte County!" the Kansas City Kansas Police department wrote on Facebook following King's passing.

'Our thoughts and prayers go out to our brothers and sisters in Wyandotte County.

Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer (R) was told of the shooting on Friday as he arrived for a forum in Kansas City. Video from the scene showed the courthouse surrounded by yellow police tape, several police vehicles parked in the street and numerous uniformed law enforcement officers walking the grounds.
